Fred Meyer manager partners with WorkSource

Diana Jackson has much to say about workforce solutions and resources—and she can talk about it from both the business and the job-seeker side.

In 1996, she competed with 40 others to land a cashier’s job with Fred Meyer through interviews arranged by the same people who now staff WorkSource Centers in King County. Her wages have nearly tripled since then, she said.

Now, as the human resources manager for the Fred Meyer’s Marysville store, she’s reaped many benefits from tapping into business services at WorkSource Centers in her part of the state. “It’s phenomenal, an incredible resource. It’s the first place we go for help,” she said. “For example, together we recently set up 880 job interviews for our new Bellingham store in only three days.”

As Fred Meyer ramps up new stores north of Everett and develops workers to backfill openings created by transfers, there’s a shortage of funds for training, recruiting and hiring.

“This is where we come in,” said Laura Anderson, with Everett WorkSource. “We’re helping with the ongoing mass hires. And we’re on our way to solving her customized worker training need through partnering with the Everett Community College, with help from Snohomish County’s WorkForce Development Council.

Jackson said that WorkSource helps her with many aspects of her job. For example, they:
  • Recruit for specific management spots;
  • Help in developing job postings for the go2worksource site;
  • Invite her to make presentations at the WorkSource facility that benefits both partners;
  • Help her conduct team interviews to fill new store openings;
  • Announce job openings (“Last time we received 100 responses from that!” she said.); and
  • Offer use of their PCs to business customers such as Jackson.

She also values the job fairs held at the South Everett Holiday Inn, saying most other job fairs charge fees to their business customers and that the candidates she’s found there are good ones.

“They’re an incredible resource—and the first ones I call,” said Jackson. “I’ve sent other businesses to WorkSource.”
